Judging

Southern Counties Canine Association Championship Show 5th June 2011

German Shepherds – Shirley Hutchinson (Mascani)

Thanks to SCCA committee for inviting me to judge GSDs at their show.  I would also like to thank all of the exhibitors that entered the show – the quality of dogs presented was very good, in particular the Limit Bitch and Open Bitch classes were excellent.  All of the exhibits had sound temperaments and hocks were generally sound with one or two exceptions.  One concern would be the number of dogs with poor colour – particularly some sables who need more black and more depth of base colour. The ring was not easy for the dogs to gait round being half inside and half outside and working within the KC ruling on outside attraction suppressed the performance of some of the dogs.

MALES

Minor Puppy Dog (2 entered, 0 absentees)

1st Bibby’s Silkenwood Lucas

6 months,  medium size and medium strength, masculine black and gold. Good head and expression. Good front construction. Pasterns firm and normal withers. Croup of good length but a little steep. Hocks sufficiently firm for his age.  Movement was purposeful and co-ordinated. I was disappointed that he was not presented in the challenge for Best Puppy Dog.

2nd Taylor and Gudgin’s Josdan Zuper

7 months, large, medium strength, masculine sable. Head could be stronger and more typical. Shoulder well angled but upper arm short and steep. Pasterns firm and withers pronounced. Croup a little short.  Colour could be stronger. Did not show the forward reach and hind thrust of the 1st place and ambled on the walk.

Puppy Dog (3 entered, 1 absentee)

1st Reynold’s Silkenwood Reiko at Reyenheath BPD, BP

11 ½ months, large, medium strength, masculine sable.  Good head. Correct front construction. Paterns firm and withers normal. Croup a little short but well angled. Hind angulation sufficient. Hocks firm. Moved soundly away and back. Well co-ordinated on the walk and gait. I would like a darker eye.

2nd Jermey’s Iolanda Lance

10 months, large, medium strength, masculine black and gold.  Shoulder is well angled but upper arm is a little short. Firm pasterns and normal withers.  Croup a little step but of good length. Hocks are slightly long and both hocks and elbows need to firm up. Well co-ordinated walk and gait with sufficient forward reach but needs more hind thrust.

Junior Dog (6 entries, 1 absentee)

1st Melsome and Julian’s Jorrocks Boe Von Sonarly NAF

13 months, large, strong, masculine sable. He has a good head and expression. His shoulder and upper arm are of good length and angulation. He has normal withers, firm pasterns and correct over and underline. Croup is of good length and angle. Hind angulation is good and hocks are firm. Moves soundly away and back, side gait is sufficient and he moved steadily and in a controlled manner throughout the class. This boy is mature for his age and I hope he does not get any deeper in the chest.

2nd Adamson and Monkley’s Peterwell Geno JW

15 months, medium size, medium strength, masculine black and gold. He has a good head and alert expression. His shoulder is well angled, upper arm is of good length but a little steep. He has firm pasterns and normal withers, a firm back and good over and underlines. Croup is a little short but well angled. Hind angulation is good and hocks are firm. Moves soundly away and back and has a well co-ordinated gait.

3rd Farley’s Nikonis Meastro

12 months, medium size, medium strength black and gold with particularly solid black pigmentation. Good head with very alert expression. His shoulder is well angled and upper arm slightly short. Pasterns are firm and withers normal. Croup is of good length but slightly steep. Hind angulation is good and hocks are firm. At the young end of this class, his proportions need to improve as he appears a little shallow in the chest at the moment.

4th Cutler’s Norwulf Enrico Lankeela

15 months, large, medium strength, masculine black and gold. He has a good head and very alert expression but his ears are rather large and a little soft. His shoulder and upper arm are well angled and of good length. Pasterns are firm and withers normal. He has good length of croup but it is a little steep. Hind angulation is good. Moving away he is a little narrow but correct coming back although elbows could be firmer.  He ambled a great deal during the gaiting and did not show sufficient hind thrust. His overall condition should be firmer.

5th Meaton’s Moonwinds Essien

14 months, medium size, medium strength, masculine black and gold. Eyes could be darker. His front construction is good but for me his proportions are too short and his hind angulation rather exaggerated with weak hocks.

Post Graduate Dog (8 entries, 4 absentees)

1st Macdonald and Mitchell’s Conbhairean Waro

2 years, medium size, medium strength, masculine black and gold. Very good pigmentation. Very good head and excellent, alert expression. Good front construction. Pasterns firm and normal withers. Back is firm, overline and underline are good. Croup is slightly short but well angled. Hind angulation is good and hocks are firm. Sound moving away and back. Both at a walk and a gait he is well co-ordinated with good forward reach and excellent hind thrust. In the challenge I felt that he did not quite have the freedom and scope of movement of the ticket and reserve ticket winners but an excellent male none the less.

2nd Swift’s Veneze Dino

2 years, medium size, medium strength, masculine black and gold. Shoulder is well angled and of good length but upper arm is steep and slightly short. Pasterns are firm and withers pronounced. Back is firm and overline correct – underline a little short. Croup is of good length but a little steep. Hind angulation is good and hocks are firm. Moves soundly coming and going. Well co-ordinated in walk and gait with good hind thrust and sufficient forward reach.

3rd Jermey’s Iolanda Stefan

22 months, large, medium strength, masculine black and gold. Black pigmentation could be stronger. Good head and expression. Front construction good. Pasterns are firm and withers normal. Back is firm, over and underlines are correct – a dog of slightly longer proportions. Croup is of good length and angle. The overall impression of the dog is that he is a little narrow throughout and this was apparent when moving away and back. Well co-ordinated walk and gait with sufficient forward reach and hind thrust.

4th Bevan’s Conrad Spirit at Bruckeberem

2 years , medium size, medium strength, masculine black and gold – colour could be stronger and eyes darker. Good front construction. Pasterns firm and withers normal. Firm back with correct over and underlines. Croup a little steep. Hocks firm. Tail carriage a little high. Moved a little close away but correct coming. Drops on the forehand when moving, forward reach and hind thrust sufficient.

Limit Dog (5 entries, 3 absentees)

1st Turner’s Impranah Urban

2 years, large, medium strong, very masculine black and gold with very good pigmentation. Good head and alert expression. Shoulder is of good length and angle, upper arm a little steep Firm pasterns and pronounced wither. Back is firm but somewhat peaked in the middle. Underline correct. Croup of good length and angle. Tail set a little high. Moved soundly away and back and showed well co-ordinated movement with good forward reach and hind thrust.

2nd Jermey’s Indo vom Tamaraspitze

2 years, large, medium strength, masculine black and gold. Good head and very alert expression, eyes could be a little darker. Shoulder is of good length and well angled, upper arm is slightly steep. Firm pasterns and pronounced withers. Firm back and correct over and underline. Moved soundly away and back. Well co-ordinated walk and gait. Disappointingly lost first place as he did not settle into movement and his performance lacked the energy of the first dog.

Open Dog (7 entries, 2 absentees)

1st Keen’s Colkelly’s Lagos CC

3 years, large, medium strength, masculine black and gold. Black pigmentation could be stronger. Good front construction. Firm pasterns and normal withers. Firm back and correct over and underline. Good length and angle of croup. Moved soundly away and back. In both walk and gait he performed in a well-co-ordinated and harmonious manner with good forward reach and hind thrust.

2nd Davies’ Tirgram Tim Vom Haus Dexel RCC

3 years, medium size, strong, masculine black and gold. Very good head and expression. Good front construction. Firm pasterns and normal withers. Firm back and correct over and underline. Croup of good length and angle. Firm hocks. Moved soundly away and back. In his individual he moved well and with excellent forward reach and hind thrust. I prefer the overall type of this dog to the winner but he did not pull his performance together on the move which lost him first place.

3rd Smith’s Iolanda Bugatti at Sarocel ShCM

4 ½ years large, strong, masculine black and gold. Pigmentation could be stronger. Good head with very kind expression. Good front construction although chest a little deep. Firm pasterns and normal withers. Firm back and correct over and underlines. Croup of good length and angle. Moved soundly away and back. Walk and gait were well co-ordinated with sufficient forward reach and hind thrust.

4th Scott’s Iolanda Inzzaghi Irok

3 years large, medium strength, masculine black and gold. Head and little stretched and not quite typical. Good front construction. Firm pasterns and pronounced withers. A little peaked in the overline. Croup of good length but a little steep. Moved soundly away and back. Walk and gait well co-ordinated with sufficient forward reach and hind thrust.

5th Jackson’s Silverleigh Zigi at Parkrise

3 ½ years, medium size, medium strength, masculine black and gold. Good head and expression. Good front construction – chest a little deep.  Firm pasterns and normal withers. Back could be firmer. Good length of croup. Tail set and carriage high. Hocks sound away and back but elbows should be firmer. Well co-ordinated movement with sufficient forward reach and hind thrust.

Veteran Dog / Bitch (1 entry, 0 absentees)

1st Rheinmeister Chi-Ki-Mi

8 ½ years medium size, medium strength feminine black and gold. Colour could be stronger. Good head and alert expression. Correct front construction. Pasterns could be firmer, withers normal. Back could be firmer, overline and underline correct. Good length and angle of croup. Hind angulation good and hocks firm. Moved soundly away and back. Well co-ordinated walk and gait with good forward reach and hind thrust.
